About the BSE AllCap

BSE AllCap is a broad index of Indian companies listed on BSE, made up of the BSE LargeCap, BSE MidCap and BSE SmallCap. It is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization and maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd. It aims to hold at least 1200 companies at each rebalancing.

How companies are chosen

The universe is every company listed and traded on BSE. Companies in the Y, Z and P groups and InvITs are excluded, as are companies on BSE's SME platform, suspended companies, and companies listed for less than six months (one month for IPOs and spin-offs). Companies objected to by BSE's Surveillance Department or on its Graded Surveillance Measure list are also excluded.

A company must have traded on at least 80% of days over the prior six months and have an impact cost of 1% or less over the same period. Companies in the bottom 10 percentile by annualized traded value, or by 6-month average daily float-adjusted market capitalization, are then removed.

The index aims to hold at least 1200 companies at each rebalancing. If fewer remain, the traded value cut is relaxed first, then the market capitalization cut.

The BSE LargeCap, BSE MidCap and BSE SmallCap are carved out of the index by average daily total market capitalization, sorted from largest down. The companies that add up to the first 70% of the total are large-cap, the next 15% mid-cap and the last 15% small-cap, with a 5% buffer either side of each split.

How it is weighted

Companies are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization: the market value of only the shares available to trade, set by each company's investable weight factor. Foreign investment limits are not applied when the investable weight factor is set.

Investable weight factors are reviewed quarterly; a change of five percentage points or more is made as soon as reasonably possible after the data is verified. A change in a company's total shares of less than 5% is made quarterly, in Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec; a change of 5% or more is made as soon as reasonably possible.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted once a year, effective at market open on the Monday following the third Friday of Sep, using data to the last trading day of Jul.

Each quarter, a member whose trading frequency over the prior six months is below 80%, or whose average impact cost is above 1%, is removed. Between reconstitutions, new listings are added in Mar, and a company whose average daily total market capitalization falls below ₹50 crore is removed.

Base date and value

BSE AllCap launched on 15 Apr 2015. Its first value date and base date are 16 Sep 2005, with a base value of 1000.
