About mid cap stocks in India

Mid cap stocks in India are the listed companies ranked 101 to 250 by market capitalisation, the share price times the number of shares. Large caps are the 100 above them and small caps are every company below rank 250.

What the list covers

The band is set by average market cap over the latest six-month period, to Jun or Dec; the table is ordered by market cap at the latest close. Each row shows the price and the day's change, market cap, P/E, ROCE, dividend yield and the one-year return, and the columns can be reordered. The band is set by rank, not by a rupee amount, so the market cap of the smallest and largest mid cap moves with the market.

How a company becomes a mid cap

AMFI, the body of Indian fund houses, publishes the large, mid and small cap list every six months, using the average market cap of the preceding six months. SEBI's rules define the bands as ranks 1 to 100, 101 to 250 and 251 onwards. A company moves in or out when its rank crosses 100 or 250 at a review, so a stock can change class without any change in its business.

Why funds follow the class

SEBI requires a mid cap mutual fund to hold at least 65% of its assets in mid cap companies. When the list is revised, funds in the category have to adjust their holdings, which is why the dates of a revision matter to the stocks near rank 100 and rank 250.

How to read the columns

P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit. ROCE is operating profit after depreciation divided by net worth plus borrowings, and it is not worked out for a bank, an NBFC or an insurer, because a lender borrows to lend and capital employed is not its measure. Dividend yield is the dividend paid in the last year divided by the price.
