About lower circuit

Lower circuit stocks today lists the NSE and BSE shares that closed at the bottom of their daily price band. The lower circuit is the lowest price a share may trade at in one day, set as a fixed percentage below the previous close. A share at its lower circuit can fall no further that day.

Price bands

The exchange gives each share a band of 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% on either side of the previous day's close, and no trade can happen outside it. The bottom edge is the lower circuit, the top edge the upper circuit. A share with a 5% band that closed at ₹100 cannot trade below ₹95 the next day.

The exchange can move a share to a narrower or wider band. The list uses the band in force on the day of the close.

What the list shows

The page includes shares that closed at the bottom of their band on the latest session, largest fall first. Each row gives the price, the band, value traded, delivery and market cap. Tabs split the list by company size. The list is refreshed after each session closes, using closing prices.

Shares that trade in futures and options have no fixed band, so they never appear here. Their moves are limited by a separate dynamic band instead.

Reading the columns

Delivery is the share of the day's traded volume that buyers took into their accounts, rather than trading out again within the day. Value traded is the rupee total of the day's trades.

Large, mid and small caps are ranked by six-month average market cap: the top 100 companies, the next 150, and the rest. The ranking is revised twice a year.

Selling at the lower circuit

A sell order at the lower circuit goes through only when a buyer takes it. At that price more shares are offered than buyers want, so many sell orders wait unfilled, and an order not filled by the close lapses at the end of the day. A market-wide circuit breaker, which halts all trading when the Nifty 50 or the Sensex falls 10%, 15% or 20%, is a separate rule.

What is a lower circuit?

The lowest price a share may trade at in a day. The exchange sets a band of 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% either side of the previous close, and no trade can happen outside it. A share at its lower circuit closed at the bottom of its band: sellers offered more shares at that price than buyers wanted.

Can I sell a share at its lower circuit?

Yes, at the band's lowest price or above it, but the sale goes through only when a buyer takes it. At the lower circuit more shares are offered than buyers want, so many sell orders wait unfilled, and an order not filled by the close lapses at the end of the day.

Why are some large companies never on the list?

Shares traded in futures and options have no fixed price band. The exchange lets them move further in a day and widens the limit as they near it, so they never close at a band.

Does a share's price band change?

Yes. The exchange revises the bands from time to time and can move a share to a narrower or a wider one, from 20% to 5% or the reverse. The list reads each share's band for the day of the close.

What is a market-wide circuit breaker?

A halt to all trading in shares and their futures and options, on every exchange, when the Nifty 50 or the Sensex moves 10%, 15% or 20% from its previous close, whichever index gets there first. A 10% move halts trading for 45 minutes before 1 pm, for 15 minutes between 1 pm and 2:30 pm, and not at all after 2:30 pm; a 15% move for 1 hour 45 minutes before 1 pm, 45 minutes between 1 pm and 2 pm, and for the rest of the day after that; a 20% move at any time closes trading for the day. It is separate from each share's own price band.

What is delivery?

The part of the day's traded shares that changed hands for keeps rather than being bought and sold again within the day. The higher it is, the more of the day's trading was by people taking the shares into their accounts.

What are large, mid and small cap companies?

The classification every mutual fund uses: listed companies ranked by their average market cap over six months, the first 100 large cap, the next 150 mid cap and the rest small cap. The list is revised every January and July.

When is the list updated?

After each session closes, with the closing prices: a share is listed when its close is at the limit of that day's band.
