About Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited builds warships and other vessels in Kolkata. It has delivered 118 warships to the Indian Navy, the Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign governments. Its portfolio includes stealth frigates, anti-submarine craft, survey and research vessels and patrol vessels. It was incorporated in 1934.

Besides warships, the company has diversified into ship repair, commercial shipbuilding for domestic and export markets, portable steel bridges, deck machinery, marine diesel engines and naval surface guns. Its ship repair work is done at the three dry docks of the Kidderpore Dock system, taken over from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata under a Concession Agreement. Its commercial shipbuilding includes ferries for the Government of West Bengal and multi-purpose vessels for a client in Germany, whose order tally with the company stands at twelve vessels. The Diesel Engine Plant at Ranchi assembles and tests marine diesel engines in partnership with MTU, Germany. The 30 mm naval surface gun was developed by the company.

The company has four distinct shipyards in Kolkata, with the capacity to build 28 ships at a time, and a diesel engine plant at Ranchi. It has exported steel bridges to Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan, and has refitted coast guard ships of Seychelles and Mauritius.

The Government of India took over the company in 1960. In 1961 it delivered INS Ajay, independent India's first indigenously built warship. The Central Government is its promoter. A promoter is the person or group that set up a company or controls it. The company works under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence.
