About the BSE Next 500

The BSE NEXT 500 is an index of the 500 companies in the BSE 1000 that are not part of the BSE 500. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of BSE Ltd, and weights its companies by float-adjusted market capitalization.

How companies are chosen

The universe is the BSE 1000, and every company in it that is not in the BSE 500 joins the index. No separate ranking or size cut-off is applied. Differential Voting Rights shares (DVRs) can also be included, provided the ordinary share class is in the universe and the DVRs pass the liquidity criteria. Because of this, the index can hold more than 500 stocks while the number of companies stays at 500.

Eligibility to enter the BSE 1000 itself needs a listing history of at least six months at BSE (one month for IPOs and spin-offs) and trading on at least 80% of trading days during the six-month reference period. Membership is not dropped just because a company appears to break an addition rule later, unless ongoing conditions warrant a change.

How it is weighted

Each company is weighted by its float-adjusted market capitalization: its market value counting only the shares available for trading, as set by an Investable Weight Factor (IWF). IWFs are reviewed quarterly and take effect at the open of the Monday following the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. A change of five percentage points or more is made as soon as reasonably possible after the data is verified.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted twice a year, effective at the open of the Monday following the third Friday of Jun and Dec, using the last trading day of Apr and Oct as the reference date. Between reviews, a company dropped after a corporate action is replaced by the most eligible non-constituent to keep the count at 500. Companies added to the Graded Surveillance Measure list are dropped monthly.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 16 Sep 2005 and a base value of 1,000. It was launched on 10 Feb 2025, and its history from 16 Sep 2005 is calculated back from that launch.
