About the BSE LargeCap
The BSE LargeCap is the large-cap segment of the BSE AllCap, a broad index of the Indian equity market: the companies that together make up the top 70% of the AllCap's total market capitalization. Its rules are set by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
Companies in the BSE AllCap are ranked by average daily total market capitalization, the value of all a company's shares, largest first. Those whose running total reaches 70% are large-cap. The BSE MidCap takes the next 15% and the BSE SmallCap the final 15%.
A buffer of ±5% around each split reduces turnover: a company whose rank moves within that range keeps its size classification.
The AllCap itself requires a company to have traded on at least 80% of trading days over the prior six months. It leaves out companies listed for less than six months (one month for IPOs and spin-offs), companies on BSE's SME platform and suspended companies, and aims for at least 1,200 companies at each rebalancing.
How it is weighted
Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization: the value of each company's shares available to trade, not of all its shares.
When it is reviewed
Size classes are set at the annual reconstitution, effective at market open on the Monday following the third Friday of Sep, using data from the last trading day of Jul. A class then stays until the next Sep unless a spin-off, merger or similar event roughly halves or doubles the company's total market capitalization; price moves do not.
Quarterly reviews fall in Dec, Mar and Jun. A class change between reconstitutions takes effect at market open on the Monday following the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep or Dec, using data from the last trading day of Jan, Apr, Jul or Oct.
Base date and value
The index's history is calculated from 16 Sep 2005, its base date, at a base value of 1000. It was launched on 15 Apr 2015.
