About Hindalco Industries

Hindalco Industries Limited, the Aditya Birla Group's metals company, makes aluminium, copper and specialty alumina.12 In India it covers the aluminium chain from bauxite mining and alumina refining to smelting, rolling, extrusion and foil, and it runs a copper smelter at Dahej, Gujarat.23 Through Novelis, a wholly owned subsidiary, it rolls and recycles aluminium in North America, South America, Europe and Asia for automotive, beverage packaging and aerospace customers.45

The company reports its results in segments for Novelis, Aluminium Upstream, Aluminium Downstream and Copper.6 Its aluminium products run from alumina (the oxide refined from bauxite ore and smelted into aluminium) and primary aluminium (ingots, billets and wire rods) to flat rolled products (sheet and coil), foil, extrusions (shapes made by pushing metal through a die) and commercial plates.7 In copper it makes cathodes, continuous cast rods, inner grooved tubes (copper tubes used in air conditioners) and the precious metals gold and silver.7 Its specialty alumina (alumina grades made for uses other than making metal) goes into refractories, ceramics, abrasives, flame retardants, lithium ion batteries and semiconductors.8 It has 48 manufacturing units in 10 countries.2

It was incorporated in 1958.9 In the year to Mar 2008 it acquired Novelis, and bought Alcan's stake in Utkal Alumina International, making it wholly owned.10 Kumar Mangalam Birla, a non-executive director, is the company's chairman.1112
