About NSE and BSE listed companies
NSE and BSE listed companies are the companies whose shares trade on India's two main stock exchanges, the National Stock Exchange and BSE, formerly the Bombay Stock Exchange. This page indexes them by first letter, by size and by sector and ranks the 100 largest; each company's own page has its price, results, owners and valuation.
Listing on two exchanges
A company lists when its shares are admitted to trade on an exchange, so the public can buy and sell them. A company can list on NSE, on BSE, or on both. BSE, founded in 1875, has the larger count of listed companies, many of them small. NSE began equity trading in 1994. Companies listed on both trade under the same ISIN, the 12-character code that identifies a security, but each exchange has its own trading symbol.
Sector grouping
Sectors follow the common industry classification that NSE Indices and BSE introduced together, in force since 31 Mar 2022. It has four levels: 12 macro-economic sectors, 22 sectors, 59 industries and 197 basic industries. The 22 sectors on this page are the second level, such as Financial Services, Information Technology, Capital Goods and Healthcare.
A company sits in one basic industry. Where it runs several businesses, it is placed by the activity that brings in more than half of its revenue, since revenue changes less from year to year than profit.
Large, mid and small cap
Market capitalisation is the share price multiplied by the number of shares issued. SEBI defines a large cap as the 100 companies with the highest market cap, a mid cap as those ranked 101 to 250, and a small cap as rank 251 onward. AMFI, the mutual fund industry body, publishes the list twice a year from six months of average market cap, and fund houses use it.
This page applies the same ranks: large cap is the top 100, mid cap the next 150, and small cap everything after, ranked on average market cap over six months.
Rankings and movers
The 100 largest companies are shown in a table ordered by market cap, which can be reordered by the day's move, one-year return, P/E, ROCE or dividend yield. P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit: what the market pays for each rupee of a year's profit. ROCE, return on capital employed, is not worked out for banks, NBFCs and insurers, which borrow to lend, so the table shows Lender in its place.
The movers panel lists top gainers, top losers, the most traded by value and companies at 52-week highs and lows, over windows from one day to one year, and can be limited to companies worth ₹500 crore or more.
