About most active

Most active stocks today is a ranking of shares by the value traded in the day on Indian exchanges: the rupees that changed hands, not the number of shares. A stock is most active when buyers and sellers are trading it in large amounts, whatever its price direction.

How the ranking works

Traded value is the number of shares that changed hands times the price of each trade, added up over the session. Every company listed on NSE or BSE appears once, at its NSE price where NSE lists it; companies listed only on BSE join with their closing prices. The list updates every quarter hour between 9:15 am and 3:30 pm on a trading day, and again after the close.

Value and volume

Volume counts shares; value counts rupees. A stock priced at a few rupees can trade crores of shares and still turn over less money than a high-priced large company trading far fewer. Ranking by value puts stocks side by side on the money moved, so low-priced stocks do not crowd the top on share count alone.

Columns

Each row shows the day's price and percentage change, the value traded in ₹ crore, and the shares traded. Volume vs usual is the shares traded in the day divided by the average of the 50 sessions before it, so 2x means twice the recent norm. Delivery is the share of traded quantity that was taken into demat accounts rather than squared off within the day; the rest was intraday trading.

Cap tabs and cut-off

The table ranks only companies with a market cap of ₹500 Cr or more. The tabs show the 30 most traded in each size band, with companies ordered by six-month average market cap: ranks 1 to 100 are large cap, 101 to 250 mid cap, and the rest small cap, revised every Jan and Jul. Market cap is the share price times the number of shares issued.

Reading a heavy-volume day

High activity means many trades, not a direction. It can sit alongside a rising or a falling price. A volume multiple well above 1x shows the stock trading more than its own recent pattern.

What makes a share most active?

The value of its shares traded in the day: the number of shares that changed hands times the price of each trade. Value, not the number of shares, so a ₹10 share and a ₹10,000 share are ranked on the same footing.

Does the list include BSE shares?

Yes. Every company listed on NSE or BSE is ranked once, by its NSE price where NSE lists it and by its BSE price where only BSE does. While the market is open the list ranks the shares trading on NSE, and companies listed only on BSE join it with the closing prices.

What does volume against usual mean?

The shares traded in the day divided by the average of the 50 sessions before it. A move on three times the usual volume had far more trading behind it than the same move on a quiet day.

What is delivery?

The part of the day's traded shares that changed hands for keeps rather than being bought and sold again within the day. The higher it is, the more of the day's trading was by people taking the shares into their accounts.

What are large, mid and small cap companies?

The classification every mutual fund uses: listed companies ranked by their average market cap over six months, the first 100 large cap, the next 150 mid cap and the rest small cap. The list is revised every January and July.

How often is the list updated?

Every quarter hour while the market is open, 9:15 am to 3:30 pm on a trading day, and again with the closing prices after the session.
