About upper circuit

Upper circuit stocks are shares that closed the day at the top of their daily price band on NSE or BSE, the highest price they were allowed to trade at. This page lists them after each session, with the band and the rise, and sorts by largest rise first.

Price bands

A price band is the widest move from the previous close that a share may trade within in one day. The exchange sets it at 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% for each share and can revise it. Trades at prices outside the band are not accepted. This page uses the band in force on the closing day.

What counts as upper circuit here

A share is listed when its close for the day is at the top of its band, on NSE or BSE. The page sorts the list by the day's rise, largest first, and shows each share's band, delivery share, value traded and market cap. It is built after the session closes, from closing prices, and tabs split it by company size.

Shares with no fixed band

Shares that trade in futures and options have no fixed daily band. The exchange applies a dynamic band that it widens in steps as the price nears the limit, so these shares are not held at a fixed limit and the page does not list them.

Delivery share

Delivery is the part of the day's traded shares that were taken into demat accounts instead of being bought and sold again within the day. It is shown beside each share, since a circuit can come on thin trading.

Market-wide circuit breakers

These are separate from share bands. If the Nifty 50 or the Sensex falls or rises 10%, 15% or 20% from the previous close, trading in the whole market halts. A 10% move halts it for 45 minutes before 1 pm, 15 minutes from 1 pm to 2:30 pm, and not at all after 2:30 pm. A 15% move halts it for 1 hour 45 minutes before 1 pm, 45 minutes from 1 pm to 2 pm, and for the rest of the day after 2 pm. A 20% move closes trading for the day.

What is an upper circuit?

The highest price a share may trade at in a day. The exchange sets a band of 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% either side of the previous close, and no trade can happen outside it. A share at its upper circuit closed at the top of its band: buyers wanted more shares at that price than sellers offered.

Why are some large companies never on the list?

Shares traded in futures and options have no fixed price band. The exchange lets them move further in a day and widens the limit as they near it, so they never close at a band.

Does a share's price band change?

Yes. The exchange revises the bands from time to time and can move a share to a narrower or a wider one, from 20% to 5% or the reverse. The list reads each share's band for the day of the close.

What is a market-wide circuit breaker?

A halt to all trading in shares and their futures and options, on every exchange, when the Nifty 50 or the Sensex moves 10%, 15% or 20% from its previous close, whichever index gets there first. A 10% move halts trading for 45 minutes before 1 pm, for 15 minutes between 1 pm and 2:30 pm, and not at all after 2:30 pm; a 15% move for 1 hour 45 minutes before 1 pm, 45 minutes between 1 pm and 2 pm, and for the rest of the day after that; a 20% move at any time closes trading for the day. It is separate from each share's own price band.

What is delivery?

The part of the day's traded shares that changed hands for keeps rather than being bought and sold again within the day. The higher it is, the more of the day's trading was by people taking the shares into their accounts.

What are large, mid and small cap companies?

The classification every mutual fund uses: listed companies ranked by their average market cap over six months, the first 100 large cap, the next 150 mid cap and the rest small cap. The list is revised every January and July.

When is the list updated?

After each session closes, with the closing prices: a share is listed when its close is at the limit of that day's band.
