About the BSE India 150
The BSE India 150 is an index of the top 150 companies in the BSE 500 by free-float market capitalisation, weighted by float-adjusted market cap and maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd. Free float is the part of a company's shares that is available for public trading.
How companies are chosen
The universe is the BSE 500. For each company the index looks at three figures over the prior six months as of the rebalancing reference date: average daily free-float market capitalisation, annualised traded value and trading frequency. A stock listed for less than six months is measured from its listing date. Annualised traded value is the median of the monthly medians of daily traded value, annualised on 250 trading days a year.
A stock must pass these steps in order: an Investible Weight Factor (the share of a company's stock counted as free float) of at least 0.2; an annualised daily turnover ratio of at least 0.20, or 0.16 for existing members; and trading on at least 90% of days. The top 150 by six-month average free-float market capitalisation are then selected, and if fewer than 150 qualify, the next highest by that measure are added until 150 is reached.
Differential voting rights (DVR) shares, a second share class carrying different voting rights, can be included, which can take the number of stocks above 150, while the number of companies stays fixed at 150.
How it is weighted
Two limits apply to stocks not linked to derivatives trading: any one share class cannot exceed 5% of the index, and together they cannot exceed 10%. If a limit is breached at reconstitution, the next eligible stock is selected instead.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted semi-annually, in Jun and Dec. In each review the top 120 companies by average six-month free-float market capitalisation are selected whether or not they are members. Existing members ranked 121 to 180 are kept in order of rank until 150 is reached, and if that falls short, non-members are added in order of rank.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 17 Apr 2025, and its values run from a first value date of 20 Jun 2005 with a base value of 1500. It is calculated at the end of each day in INR and USD.
