About Avenue Supermarts

Avenue Supermarts Limited runs DMart, a national supermarket chain in India that focuses on value retailing.1 Its stores sell everyday-use items in foods, non-foods (FMCG, fast-moving consumer goods such as soaps and detergents) and general merchandise and apparel.12 It works on an Everyday Low Cost/Everyday Low Price model: it keeps buying and operating costs low so that prices stay low every day rather than through special promotions.3

Its stores are in 15 states, 1 union territory and the National Capital Region, and it expands cluster by cluster, adding stores where it is already present before entering new regions.4 The company describes value retail as more supply chain than retail: it buys in bulk and moves goods through its own large distribution centres instead of having vendors deliver small lots to each store.56 Its subsidiary Avenue E-Commerce Limited runs DMart Ready, which takes grocery and household orders through a mobile app and website.7 Other subsidiaries pack and sell grocery products, spices and dry fruits (Align Retail Trades Private Limited), run food outlets at DMart stores (Avenue Food Plaza Private Limited) and run pharmacy stores (Reflect Healthcare and Retail Private Limited).8

DMart was conceived by Radhakishan Damani, a value investor (one who buys shares he judges to be priced below their worth), as a grocery retail chain aimed at the value segment, and its first store opened in Mumbai, Maharashtra, in 2002.910 It was incorporated in 2000.11 Promoters held 74.51% of the company's shares at 31 March 2026.12
