About large cap stocks

Large cap stocks are the 100 largest listed Indian companies by market capitalisation, the share price times the number of shares. The class is set by average market cap over the latest six-month period, the classification mutual funds use; the table is ordered by market cap at the latest close.

Large cap definition

SEBI's definition for mutual funds, in force since 2017, ranks listed companies by full market cap. The 1st to 100th are large caps, the 101st to 250th are mid caps, and everything from the 251st down is a small cap. The ranking decides which companies count as large cap for fund purposes; it is not a statement about quality.

How this list is built

The page takes each company's average market cap over the latest six-month period, to Jun or Dec, and keeps the top 100. Averaging over six months stops a company moving in and out of the list on a single day's price. The table shows the latest price, market cap, P/E, ROCE, dividend yield and one-year return, and can be reordered by any of them. The Valuation and Latest quarter tabs show two sets of columns for the same companies.

P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit. ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation divided by net worth plus borrowings. It is not worked out for banks, NBFCs and insurers, because they borrow to lend and capital employed does not describe them.

When the list changes

AMFI, the mutual fund industry body, publishes the classification every six months, in Jan and Jul, using the average of the preceding six months. A company between ranks 100 and 101 can therefore change category at the next revision. The cut-off in rupees moves with the market, so no fixed market cap defines a large cap.

Large cap funds

SEBI requires a large cap fund to invest at least 80% of its assets in large cap companies.
