What the BSE MidSmallCap companies earned

Revenue against the same quarter a year earlier, over today's members that filed both; profit after tax added up over the members that filed the quarter. A quarter fewer than 60% of them filed is left out, and the newest is added once nearly as many have filed it as the one before.

About the BSE MidSmallCap

The BSE MidSmallCap measures the mid-cap and small-cap companies of the BSE AllCap together, the bottom 30% of its total market capitalisation. It combines the BSE MidCap and the BSE SmallCap, and is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

Members come from the BSE AllCap, which holds listed BSE companies that pass the exchange's listing-history, trading-frequency, impact-cost and surveillance screens, and aims for at least 1,200 companies at each rebalancing. Every BSE size index starts from that same universe.

The AllCap companies are sorted from largest to smallest by average daily total market capitalisation, measured over the prior 12 months, and their values are added up from the top. The first 70% of the running total is large cap, the next 15% mid cap and the final 15% small cap. The BSE MidSmallCap holds the last two bands, so it holds every mid-cap and small-cap company and no large-cap one. The BSE MidCap is the 15% mid-cap band alone, the BSE SmallCap the final 15% alone, and the BSE LargeMidCap the top 85%.

A company whose position moves within 5% either side of a split keeps its current size class. All eligible share classes of a company (common stock and differential voting rights) get the same class.

How it is weighted

Members are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalisation, which counts only the shares available for trading, set by each company's Investable Weight Factor. Factors are reviewed every quarter, and a change of five percentage points or more is made as soon as reasonably possible after the data is verified. Foreign investment limits are not applied when the factor is calculated.

When it is reviewed

Size classes are reviewed once a year at the reconstitution, effective at market open on the Monday after the third Friday of Sep, using data to the last trading day of Jul. Between reconstitutions a company may change class only after a corporate event such as a spin-off or merger that, for example, halves or doubles its market capitalisation. A price rise or fall alone does not change it.

Share count changes under 5% are made quarterly, in Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec; larger changes are made as soon as reasonably possible after the data is verified. Each quarter a member is removed if its trading frequency over the prior six months is below 80% or its average impact cost is above 1%. A company whose average daily total market capitalisation falls below ₹50 crore is removed in Mar, on data to the last trading day of Jan.

Base date and value

The index was launched on 15 Apr 2015. Its first value date and base date are 16 Sep 2005, and its base value is 1,000.
