About flexi cap funds in India

Flexi cap funds in India are open-ended equity mutual funds that must keep at least 65% of their assets in equity and equity-related instruments, with no required split between large, mid and small companies. SEBI created the category on 6 Nov 2020.

SEBI's rule for the category

SEBI requires a flexi cap fund to invest at least 65% of its total assets in equity and equity-related instruments. It sets no minimum or maximum for any market-cap band, so the manager can hold only large companies, only smaller ones, or any mix, and can change the mix at any time. The fund must pick a benchmark index suited to this open mandate. SEBI's revised categorisation circular of 26 Feb 2026 left the 65% floor unchanged.

Why the category exists

In Sep 2020 SEBI told multi cap funds to hold at least 25% each in large, mid and small companies. Fund houses that did not want that fixed split asked for another option, and SEBI added flexi cap in Nov 2020. Many existing multi cap funds were converted into flexi cap funds, which is why several schemes in this category have track records that start well before 2020.

Flexi cap and multi cap

A multi cap fund holds at least 75% in equity, with at least 25% in each of large, mid and small caps. A flexi cap fund holds at least 65% in equity and has no band minimums. The two categories can therefore hold quite different portfolios, and the share a flexi cap fund keeps in each band is the manager's choice, not a rule.

Tax on flexi cap funds

Equity-oriented funds are taxed as equity: gains on units held 12 months or less are taxed at 20%, and gains on units held longer at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh of long-term equity gains in a year. The ₹1.25 lakh exemption is shared across all equity funds and shares sold in that year. Surcharge and cess apply on top.

How this page lists the funds

The page ranks every live flexi cap fund by 5-year return, highest first, with younger funds after them by name. Returns are for each fund's Direct plan where it has one, to its latest NAV (the price of one unit); the 3 and 5 year figures are yearly rates. The medians above the table are the middle return among the funds with that much history. Size is the average money managed over the latest quarter, and cost is the yearly expense ratio.
