About aggressive hybrid funds in India

Aggressive hybrid funds in India are open-ended mutual funds that put 65% to 80% of their money in shares and 20% to 35% in debt. SEBI defines the category by that split. The mix gives them an equity tax treatment while the debt portion cushions part of the share price swings.

What SEBI requires

SEBI's categorisation circular of 26 Feb 2026 sets two bands for an aggressive hybrid fund: equity and equity-related instruments between 65% and 80% of total assets, and debt instruments between 20% and 35%. The scheme is described as an open-ended hybrid scheme investing predominantly in equity and equity-related instruments, and the scheme name must match the category name.

A fund may hold its residual portion in InvITs (infrastructure investment trusts, which own income-earning infrastructure such as roads and power lines), exchange-traded commodity derivatives, gold ETFs and silver ETFs, within the limits of the mutual fund regulations. Foreign shares and bonds count inside the equity or debt band, not as a separate asset class.

Difference from neighbouring categories

A balanced hybrid fund holds 40% to 60% in equity and 40% to 60% in debt, with no arbitrage allowed. A conservative hybrid fund holds 10% to 25% in equity. Of these three fixed-split categories, the aggressive hybrid fund has the highest equity band.

A dynamic asset allocation fund has no fixed band: the manager moves between equity and debt as the fund's model directs. An aggressive hybrid fund keeps to its 65% to 80% band at all times, and a manager who wants less equity has no room below 65%.

How the funds are run

The manager chooses the share between 65% and 80%, always inside the band. The debt portion is typically government securities, corporate bonds and money market instruments.

Taxation

Because equity stays at or above 65%, an aggressive hybrid fund is taxed as an equity-oriented fund. Units sold within 12 months give short-term capital gains taxed at 20%. Units sold after 12 months give long-term gains, taxed at 12.5% on the part above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year, with that ₹1.25 lakh exemption shared across all equity shares and equity fund units sold in the year. The rates were not changed in Budget 2026.
