About stock market holidays
Stock market holidays 2026 are the days the NSE and BSE share markets stay closed. This page lists each holiday with its date and weekday, marks the ones that fall on a weekend, and shows which other segments close, with a year selector back to 2007.
Holidays in 2026
The page lists 20 trading holidays for 2026. Four fall on a Saturday or Sunday, so 16 cost a weekday: Mahashivratri, Id-Ul-Fitr, Independence Day and Diwali Laxmi Pujan are the weekend ones. One closure is not a festival: 15 Jan, for the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections. Closed days are also counted by month. Mar 2026 has four, the most, and Jul 2026 has none.
Trading hours
On an open day the share market runs a pre-open session from 9:00 am to 9:15 am, when orders are collected and the opening price is set. Normal trading is 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. Saturdays and Sundays are closed unless the exchanges announce a special session in advance.
Muhurat trading
Muhurat trading is a one-hour session held on Diwali Laxmi Pujan as an auspicious start to the new Samvat year. Its hour changes from year to year, and the exchanges announce it by circular shortly before Diwali. The page marks Diwali Laxmi Pujan on 8 Nov 2026, a Sunday, with a muhurat session.
Settlement and holidays
Settlement is when shares and money actually change hands after a trade. Since 27 Jan 2023 all Indian shares settle the next working day, called T+1. A holiday is not a working day, so a trade made the day before a holiday settles after it. This is why a stock bought on the last session before a long weekend shows in the demat account only after the break.
Other segments
Currency, commodity, interest rate and electronic gold receipt segments keep their own calendars, so some days close one segment and not another. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti on 19 Feb, for example, closes currency and interest rate derivatives while shares and commodities trade. Equity derivatives follow the share market's days.
What are the stock market timings?
The regular session runs from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday, on the days the exchanges do not list as holidays. It is preceded by a pre-open session from 9:00 am to 9:15 am, in which orders are collected and the opening price is set, and followed by a closing session from 3:40 pm to 4:00 pm at the day's closing price.
Is the stock market open on Saturday and Sunday?
No. NSE and BSE are closed every Saturday and Sunday, except for a special session the exchanges announce in advance, such as trading on a weekend day when the Union Budget is presented that day.
What is muhurat trading?
A one-hour trading session the exchanges hold on Diwali, which is otherwise a market holiday, at a time they announce a few weeks before. Trades in it are settled like those of any other trading day.
What are the commodity market timings?
On MCX, commodities traded on international prices, such as gold, silver and crude oil, trade from 9:00 am to 11:30 pm while the United States is on daylight saving time, roughly March to November, and to 11:55 pm for the rest of the year. Agricultural commodities trade from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm or 9:00 pm, by commodity. The commodity segment can close on days the share market is open, and the other way round.
