About mutual funds in India

Mutual funds in India pool money from many investors and invest it in shares, bonds or other assets under rules set by SEBI, the market regulator. SEBI places every fund in one category: equity, debt, hybrid, life cycle, or other schemes such as index funds, ETFs and funds of funds.

How SEBI groups funds

SEBI's circular of 26 Feb 2026 sets the current categories, replacing the scheme of Oct 2017. A fund's name must match its category.

Solution oriented schemes (retirement and children's funds) were discontinued; since 20 Mar 2026 a fund house may keep its existing one or stop subscriptions and merge it.

Equity categories

A large cap fund holds at least 80% of its assets in large cap companies, a mid cap or small cap fund at least 65% in its own size band, and a large and mid cap fund at least 35% in each. A multi cap fund holds at least 25% each in large, mid and small cap companies. A flexi cap fund holds at least 65% in equity, in any split.

Focused, value, contra and dividend yield funds now hold at least 80% in equity, up from 65%; a focused fund holds at most 30 stocks. ELSS is named ELSS Tax Saver Fund; units are locked in for three years.

Sectoral and thematic funds, earlier one category, are now two, each holding at least 80% in its sector or theme. Their overlap with other equity funds, except large cap funds, is capped at 50%, averaged over each quarter; overlap adds up, for each stock two funds share, the smaller of its two weights. Existing funds have three years to comply or are merged.

Debt and hybrid categories

Debt funds lend to governments and companies. Many are sorted by maturity or Macaulay duration (the weighted average time until interest and principal are paid), from overnight to long duration, others by what they hold, such as gilt, corporate bond or credit risk.

Hybrid funds mix equity, debt and sometimes gold or silver in set ranges, from conservative hybrid (10% to 25% in equity) to aggressive hybrid (65% to 80%).

Life cycle and other funds

Life cycle funds, added on 26 Feb 2026, each carry a maturity date 5 to 30 years after launch, in steps of five years, and cut their equity share on a set path as that date nears.

An index fund or ETF copies an index instead of choosing stocks. A fund of funds holds units of other funds.

What this page shows

The page counts the funds in each category with its three largest, lists every fund house by its live funds, and ranks the largest funds by the latest quarter's average assets, with 1, 3 and 5 year returns (3 and 5 year as yearly rates) and cost.
