About top losers

Top losers today is the list of shares that fell the most in the day on the Indian stock market, ranked by percentage fall from the previous day's close to the latest price. It covers companies with a market cap of ₹500 Cr or more and updates through the trading session.

How the fall is measured

The fall is the latest price minus the previous day's close, divided by that close. A share that closed at ₹100 and trades at ₹94 is down 6%.

Which shares are ranked

Only companies with a market cap of ₹500 Cr or more are ranked. Market cap is the share price multiplied by the number of shares. Smaller companies are left out because a few trades can move their price by a large percentage, but they still count in the totals of shares that rose and fell. Each company appears once, at its NSE price where listed there and at its BSE price otherwise.

The size tabs split the list: large cap is the top 100 companies by six-month average market cap, mid cap the next 150, small cap the rest.

Circuit limits and big falls

Exchanges set a daily price band on most shares, usually 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% of the previous close, and no trade can be made beyond it. A share at the bottom of its band is on its lower circuit. Shares in the futures and options segment have no fixed band, so a fall in one of them is not stopped at a set percentage.

Reading the columns

Beside each fall the list shows price, market cap and value traded (shares traded multiplied by price). Volume vs usual divides the day's shares traded by the average of the previous 50 sessions. Delivery is the share of traded volume that changed hands for keeps rather than being bought and sold within the day.

Timing and longer windows

The list updates every quarter hour from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm on trading days, and again with closing prices after the session. The page also lists the biggest losers over 1 month to 1 year, and how many shares rose and fell in each sector.

What is a top loser?

A share whose price fell the most in the day, in per cent, from the previous day's close to the latest price. The list ranks every company worth ₹500 Cr or more, and the size switch narrows it to the large, mid or small caps.

Does the list include BSE shares?

Yes. Every company listed on NSE or BSE is ranked once, by its NSE price where NSE lists it and by its BSE price where only BSE does. While the market is open the list ranks the shares trading on NSE, and companies listed only on BSE join it with the closing prices.

Which shares on the list are in the Nifty 50?

A share in the Nifty 50 or the Nifty Next 50 carries the index's name in its row, after its symbol and industry, from the index's latest list of companies. Each index's own page lists all its companies.

Why are companies under ₹500 Cr left out?

A small company's price can move 20% on a handful of trades, and below ₹500 Cr of market cap such shares would fill the top of the list. They are left out of the list but still counted in how many shares rose and fell.

What does volume against usual mean?

The shares traded in the day divided by the average of the 50 sessions before it. A move on three times the usual volume had far more trading behind it than the same move on a quiet day.

What is delivery?

The part of the day's traded shares that changed hands for keeps rather than being bought and sold again within the day. The higher it is, the more of the day's trading was by people taking the shares into their accounts.

What are large, mid and small cap companies?

The classification every mutual fund uses: listed companies ranked by their average market cap over six months, the first 100 large cap, the next 150 mid cap and the rest small cap. The list is revised every January and July.

How often is the list updated?

Every quarter hour while the market is open, 9:15 am to 3:30 pm on a trading day, and again with the closing prices after the session.
