About small cap stocks in India

Small cap stocks in India are the listed companies ranked 251st or lower by market capitalisation, the price of one share times the number of shares. The page lists the 500 largest of them, with the class set by six-month average market cap.

How the class is defined

SEBI sorts listed companies by full market capitalisation. The 100 largest are large cap, ranks 101 to 250 are mid cap, and everything from rank 251 down is small cap. Mutual funds use the ranking to decide which shares count toward a small cap limit.

AMFI, the body of fund houses, publishes the list twice a year. It ranks companies on their average market cap over the previous six months.

How this page builds the list

The page applies the same rule: companies are ranked by average market cap over the latest six-month period, to Jun or Dec, and any company ranked after 250 is small cap. Both NSE and BSE listings are included.

The table shows the 500 largest small caps by market cap at the latest close; the first rows show at once and a link opens the rest. The class comes from the six-month average and the market cap column from the latest close, so the two can differ.

Columns and how to read them

Each row gives the price, market cap, one-year return, P/E, ROCE and dividend yield. P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit. ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation divided by net worth plus borrowings.

ROCE is left blank for banks, NBFCs and insurers. They borrow in order to lend, so capital employed does not measure them. The table can be reordered by the day's move, the year's return, P/E, ROCE or dividend yield.

Small cap funds

SEBI requires a small cap fund to hold at least 65% of its assets in small cap shares, as classified by the same ranking. A company that moves up into the mid cap band at a revision stops counting toward that 65%.
