About Jindal Steel

Jindal Steel Limited is an integrated steel maker: it mines iron ore and coal, makes iron and steel, and rolls the steel into flat and long products.123 Its customers are in infrastructure, construction, railways, automotive, engineering, energy and defence.1 Its plants are in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.1

It reports a single business segment, steel products, and sells rebars (steel bars that reinforce concrete) to individual home builders under the JINDAL PANTHER name.45 At Angul in Odisha it runs a coal gasification plant, a direct reduced iron plant (iron made from ore without melting it), blast furnaces (which melt ore into iron), steelmaking, a plate mill and a hot strip mill (which rolls steel slabs into coils); the company says it is India's only steel plant making iron from syngas, a gas made from coal.3 Raigarh in Chhattisgarh makes long and special steel products, and Patratu in Jharkhand rolls TMT (heat-treated) rebars and wire rods.2

It was incorporated in 1979, and its founder chairman was Om Prakash Jindal.67 It took over the Patratu site from the Birla Group in 2006 and commissioned 2 new rolling mills there in 2010.8 In April 2025 its subsidiary Jindal Steel Odisha Limited bought all of Allied Strips Limited, a maker of hot and cold rolled coils, for ₹217.53 crore.9

Naveen Jindal is its non-executive chairman.10 Its wholly owned subsidiaries include Jindal Steel Odisha Limited, whose lenders sanctioned debt for setting up a 6 MTPA (million tonnes a year) integrated steel plant, and Jindal Steel (Mauritius) Limited, which holds overseas companies mainly in mining.11129

Return is price growth plus the average dividend yield. Change in P/E is (1 + price growth) / (1 + earnings growth) - 1, so the parts compound rather than add. Earnings growth over 3 years is on profit divided by shares in issue at both ends: the earnings per share stated for one end does not match that year's profit and share count. Earnings growth over 1, 3 and 5 years includes one-off items (exceptional items and the result of businesses sold or closed) of more than a tenth of the profit of the years to Mar 2021, Mar 2023, Mar 2025 and Mar 2026.
