About the BSE SmallCap

BSE SmallCap is the index of the small-cap segment of India's stock market: the companies that make up the final 15% of the BSE AllCap by cumulative average daily total market capitalization. Its rules fix no number of companies. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

Companies come from the BSE AllCap, which starts with every company listed and traded on BSE. It drops companies in BSE's Y, Z and P trading groups, InvITs, companies on BSE's SME platform, suspended companies and those with under six months of listing history (one month for IPOs and spin-offs). A company must also have traded on at least 80% of days over the prior six months and have an impact cost of 1% or less. The BSE AllCap aims for at least 1,200 companies at each rebalancing.

The AllCap companies are sorted by average daily total market capitalization (the value of all their shares), largest first. Those that add up to the first 70% are large-cap, the next 15% mid-cap and the final 15% small-cap, which make up the BSE SmallCap. A ±5% buffer around each split keeps a company in its size group if its ranking moves within that band.

A size group changes between annual reconstitutions only after a capital event such as a spin-off or merger that, for example, halves or doubles a company's market capitalization; a price move alone never changes it. Between reconstitutions a company is also removed if its average daily total market capitalization falls below ₹50 crore, checked each Mar. Its nearest siblings are the BSE MidCap, the 15% above it, and the BSE SmallCap Select Index, which holds 60 of the largest and most liquid companies within the BSE SmallCap.

How it is weighted

The index is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, which counts only the float, the shares available for trading. Each company's available float is set by its Investable Weight Factor, reviewed quarterly; a change of five percentage points or more is made as soon as reasonably possible after the data is verified.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted once a year, effective at market open on the Monday following the third Friday of Sep, using data as of the last trading day of Jul. Share counts, float factors and size classification changes are updated quarterly, effective on the Monday following the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. New listings that meet the criteria are added in Mar, and trading frequency and impact cost are rechecked every quarter.

Base date and value

The BSE SmallCap was launched on 11 Apr 2005, and its values run from 1 Apr 2003. Its history before 15 Apr 2015 is based on its legacy index, the BSE SMALL CAP.
