About the heatmap
The stock market heatmap shows the largest listed Indian companies on one map, grouped by sector. Each tile's size is the company's market cap and its colour is the price move over the window chosen: today, 1 month, 3 months or 1 year.
Heatmap tiles
Market cap is the price of one share multiplied by the number of shares issued, so it is the market's value of the whole company. A larger tile means a larger market cap. Tiles are grouped by sector, and the sector's own tile is sized by the combined market cap of its companies.
Green tiles rose over the window and red tiles fell. Grey means the share barely moved.
Colour scale
Each window has its own move at which the colour is deepest: 3% for today, 10% for 1 month, 20% for 3 months and 40% for 1 year. A move at or beyond that level gets the deepest shade, so a 1 year map is not read on the same scale as a one-day one.
Sector moves
A sector's move is weighted by market cap: each company's market cap multiplied by its move, added up across the sector, then divided by the sector's total market cap. A large company therefore counts for more than a small one in the same sector. Below the map, each sector also lists how many of its shares rose and how many fell.
Companies shown
The map shows the largest 100, 250 or 500 companies by market cap among those that traded on the latest day. Smaller companies are left out because their tiles would be too small to read. The 100 and 250 cut-offs match the ranks that mark large cap (the top 100) and mid cap (ranks 101 to 250) in the list AMFI publishes twice a year. That list ranks on average market cap over six months, while this map ranks on the latest market cap, so the two sets can differ.
Update timing
The map updates every quarter hour while the market is open and again with closing prices after the session. Outside trading hours it shows the last close.
How do I read the heatmap?
Each tile is a company, inside the block of its sector. Its area is its market cap, so the largest companies take the most room, and its colour is its move over the window chosen: green for a rise, red for a fall, deeper the larger the move. A grey tile barely moved.
Which companies are on it?
The largest companies by market cap that traded on the latest day: 100, 250 or 500 of them. Smaller companies would be tiles too small to read.
What does the depth of colour mean?
Each window has its own scale, shown under the map: today's moves are read against 3%, a month's against 10%, three months' against 20% and a year's against 40%. A move at or past the scale takes the deepest colour.
How are the companies grouped into sectors?
Each company sits in the sector of its business, the same sectors as the site's sector pages, and a sector's name on the map opens its page where it has one. The figure beside the name is the sector's move: its companies' moves on the map, each weighted by its market cap.
When is it updated?
Every quarter hour while the market is open, with each company's latest price, and again with the closing prices after the session.
