About the BSE Total Market

BSE Total Market is a broad index of BSE-listed companies, drawn from the BSE AllCap index and holding at least 1000 companies. It covers 98% of the AllCap index by total market capitalization, the combined value of all of a company's shares. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

The universe is the BSE AllCap index. A stock needs a listing history of at least six months at BSE (one month for IPOs and spin-offs) and must have traded on at least 80% of trading days at BSE during the six-month reference period. Differential voting rights (DVR) shares that meet these tests are combined with the company's common stock.

Eligible companies are ranked by their 6-month average daily total market capitalization. The index holds 1000 companies or the top 98 percentile of securities on that ranking, whichever is higher. It held 1004 companies on 30 Sep 2026.

A buffer applies at each selection. The top 80% of the final count are included directly, whether or not they are current members. Current members are then kept up to 120% of the final count until the target count is reached. If the count is still short, non-members are added in order of rank.

A large IPO can join between reviews if it ranks among the top 30 companies on the index's ranking, with one month of listing history and five days' notice. If the top 98 percentile count is then below 1000, the smallest company is removed.

How it is weighted

Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization. Float is the part of a company's shares available to trade, set by its Investable Weight Factor (IWF), and foreign investment limits are not applied when the IWF is calculated.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted twice a year, effective at the open of the Monday after the third Friday of Jun and Dec. The reference dates are the last trading days of Apr and Oct.

IWFs are reviewed quarterly, and share count changes under 5% are made quarterly, both at the open of the Monday after the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. A change of 5% or more in shares, or of five percentage points or more in an IWF, is made as soon as reasonably possible after the data is verified.

Companies added to the Graded Surveillance Measure (GSM) list are dropped monthly, effective at the open of the Tuesday after the first Monday of the month. A dropped company must stay off the list for six consecutive months to be reconsidered.

Base date and value

The index launched on 23 Jul 2026. Its values start on 16 Sep 2005, the base date, at a base value of 1000. Figures before the launch date are back-tested.
