About the Nifty 500

The Nifty 500 is an index of the top 500 companies by full market capitalisation among the companies listed on NSE that meet its eligibility rules, maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

The eligible universe is companies ranked within the top 800 on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation over the previous six months, and traded on at least 90% of days in that period. A company also needs a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date.

A security is added if it ranks among the top 350 by full market capitalisation, or if its full market capitalisation is 1.50 times that of the last constituent. It is dropped if its rank by full market capitalisation or average turnover falls below 800. A stock also needs an investible weight factor of at least 0.10 (10% free float), or a six-month average free float market capitalisation of at least 25% of the six-month average full market capitalisation of the smallest existing member.

It held 501 companies on 30 Sep 2026. When shares with differential voting rights are included, an index may not have a fixed number of securities.

The Nifty 100 takes the top 100 companies of the Nifty 500, the Nifty Midcap 150 those ranked 101-250, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 those ranked 251-500.

How it is weighted

The index is computed by the free float market capitalisation method.

When it is reviewed

Members are reviewed every six months, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul using average data for the six months ending on the cut-off date, and four weeks' notice before a change.

Base date and value

The base date is 1 Jan 1995 and the base value is 1000.
