About the BSE 500

The BSE 500 is the top 500 companies listed on BSE across all major industries, maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

The BSE 500 is derived from the constituents of the BSE 1000. At each rebalancing, a company must rank in the top 750 of the eligible universe by annualized traded value and in the top 750 by average free float market capitalization (the market value of the available float, which investable weight factors define) over six months. It must also have traded on at least 80% of trading days at BSE in that period.

Annualized traded value is the median of the monthly medians of daily traded values over the observation period, annualized using 250 trading days in a year. Companies that pass are ranked by average daily total market capitalization: the top 400 are selected, then existing constituents ranked 401 to 600 are added in order of rank until the count reaches 500. If the count is still short, other companies are added in order of rank. If fewer than 500 companies pass, the free float rank limit is widened in steps of 100.

A company may have a second class of shares with differential voting rights (DVRs) in the index beside its ordinary shares, provided the ordinary shares are in the index or added at the same time and the DVRs outstanding are more than 10% of the ordinary shares outstanding, so the index can hold more than 500 stocks while the number of companies stays fixed at 500.

How it is weighted

Constituents are weighted by free float market capitalization.

When it is reviewed

Members are reviewed twice a year. Changes take effect on the Monday following the third Friday of Jun and Dec, on data to the last trading day of Apr and Oct.

Base date and value

The BSE 500's values start on 1 Feb 1999, its first value date; it was launched on 9 Aug 1999.
