About the Nifty Midcap 150

The Nifty Midcap 150 is an index of the 150 companies ranked 101 to 250 by full market capitalisation from the Nifty 500, built to measure the performance of mid-sized companies. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

A company must be a member of the Nifty 500. A company joins if its full market capitalisation ranks among the top 225. A company also joins if its full market capitalisation is 1.50 times that of the last constituent in the Nifty Midcap 150. A member is excluded if its rank falls below 275 or if it leaves the Nifty 500.

The investible weight factor, a unit of floating stock expressed as a number available for trading, must be at least 0.10 (10% free float). A company below that still qualifies if the 6 month average free float market capitalisation is at least 25% of the 6 month average full market capitalisation of the smallest existing constituent, as of the cut-off date. A newly listed security is checked on three months of data instead of six.

How it is weighted

The index is computed by the free float market capitalisation method: its level reflects the total free float market value of all its stocks relative to a base market capitalisation value. The investible weight factor is a unit of floating stock, expressed as a number available for trading; shareholding reported under the promoter category is excluded from the free float factor.

When it is reviewed

The index is re-balanced semi-annually. The cut-off dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul of each year, and average data for the six months ending the cut-off date is used. Four weeks prior notice is given to the market from the date of change.

Base date and value

The base date is 1 Apr 2005 and the base value is 1000. The index was launched on 1 Apr 2016.
