About the Nifty500 LargeMidSmall Equal-Cap Weighted

The Nifty500 LargeMidSmall Equal-Cap Weighted index tracks the companies of the Nifty 500 and gives large, mid and small companies an equal total weight at each quarterly rebalance. It held 501 companies on 30 Sep 2026. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

The index holds every company in the Nifty 500, its parent index, and follows that index's membership at all times. The Nifty 500 is the top 500 companies by full market capitalisation from NSE's eligible universe. Market capitalisation is the value of all a company's shares at the market price. The three size segments come from other Nifty indices: large caps are the Nifty 100 companies, mid caps are the Nifty Midcap 150 companies (ranked 101 to 250), and small caps are the Nifty Smallcap 250 companies (ranked 251 to 500).

How it is weighted

Each of the three segments gets a total weight of 33.33% on quarterly rebalance dates. Within a segment, each stock is weighted by free-float market capitalisation, which counts only the shares available for trading in the market, taken from public shareholding.

For a company with a DVR (a share class with differential voting rights), the DVR and its parent stock are treated as one entity for capping. Their free-float market capitalisations are added and the entity takes the segment of the parent. The entity's weight is then split between the two securities in proportion to their free-float market capitalisations.

When it is reviewed

Changes in Nifty 500 membership take effect from the last trading day of Mar and Sep. Segment weights are set equal again from the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.

Outside the schedule, the index is reconstituted if a constituent leaves the Nifty 500, is suspended or delisted, or goes through a scheme of arrangement. Each quarter it is also checked against SEBI's portfolio concentration norms for ETFs and index funds announced on 10 Jan 2019, with weights realigned or an ineligible stock replaced if a norm is not met.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 7 Jun 2024. A total returns variant, the Nifty500 LargeMidSmall Equal-Cap Weighted Total Returns Index, is also published.
