About the Nifty 50

Nifty 50, maintained by NSE Indices Limited, is an index of 50 companies listed on NSE, chosen from the largest and most liquid Indian securities.

How companies are chosen

Constituents of the Nifty 100 that are available for trading in the Futures and Options segment are eligible for inclusion. A company must have traded on every trading day of the last six months (a trading frequency of 100%).

Impact cost is the percentage mark-up suffered while buying or selling the desired quantity of a security. A security is required to have traded at an average impact cost of 0.50% or less during the last six months for 90% of the observations for a portfolio of ₹10 crore.

The average free-float market capitalisation of a company must be at least 1.5 times that of the smallest constituent in the index.

How it is weighted

Each company is weighted by its free-float market capitalisation. Free float is the number of shares available for trading, and shareholding reported under the promoter category is excluded from it.

The 50 companies made up about 66% of the free-float market capitalisation of all companies on NSE, as of Sep 2026.

When it is reviewed

The review is undertaken semi-annually based on data for six months ending Jan and Jul. Replacements are implemented from the last trading day of Mar and Sep, with four weeks' prior notice to market participants.

At most five companies (10% of the index) may be added across the reviews of a calendar year. Companies removed for failing the eligibility tests do not count towards this limit.

Base date and value

The index launched on 22 Apr 1996. Its base date is 3 Nov 1995 and its base value is 1000.
