About the Nifty Smallcap 500

The Nifty Smallcap 500 is an index of 500 small cap stocks, selected on full market capitalization after the Nifty Midcap 150 and weighted by free float market capitalization. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

A company must have traded on at least 90% of days in the previous six months and have an average impact cost of no more than 1% over that period. Impact cost is the cost an investor incurs to execute a buy or sell order, measured against a benchmark cost for that security.

A company must rank within the top 1000 by both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalization over the previous six months. Stocks in the Nifty 100 or the Nifty Midcap 150 are not eligible, and neither are companies ranked within the top 225 by average daily full market capitalization.

Selection takes two steps. Step 1 takes every eligible stock that is part of the Nifty Smallcap 250. Step 2 takes the balance 250 stocks by average daily full market capitalization over the previous six months.

A stock also needs an investible weight factor (IWF) of at least 0.10, meaning 10% free float, or a six-month average free float market capitalization of at least 25% of the six-month average full market capitalization of the smallest existing constituent. The IWF expresses as a number the part of a company's shares available for trading in the market.

If fewer than 500 stocks are eligible, the shortfall is filled from stocks ranked within the top 1100, the top 1200 and so on, and the index may still hold fewer than 500 constituents. It held 505 companies on 30 Sep 2026.

When it is reviewed

The index is reviewed every six months, in Mar and Sep, using average data for the six months ended Jan and Jul. The cut-off dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul.

At a review, stocks ranked within the top 350 of the re-ranked eligible universe are compulsorily included, and so is a stock whose six-month average full market capitalization is 1.5 times that of the smallest index constituent. An existing constituent ranked below 650 is compulsorily excluded.

An extra reconstitution is started if a constituent undergoes a corporate action such as a scheme of arrangement or a delisting, or is suspended by the exchange. Each quarter the index is also screened for compliance with SEBI portfolio concentration norms for ETFs and index funds.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 23 Jan 2026.
