About the BSE Sensex

The BSE Sensex is an index of 30 large, well-established companies across key sectors, and the oldest index in India, maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

Members come from the constituents of the BSE 100. Where a company also has Differential Voting Rights Shares (DVRs) beside its ordinary shares, the DVRs are eligible too, so the index can hold more than 30 stocks, but always 30 companies. A stock needs a listing history of at least six months at BSE, must have traded on every trading day of the six-month reference period, and must have a derivative contract.

Eligible companies are ranked twice, by average six-month float-adjusted market capitalization (market capitalization based on the available float, which each company's Investable Weight Factor defines) and by average six-month total market capitalization. The top 75 of each ranking are combined. The combined list is sorted by annualized traded value (the median of the monthly medians of daily traded value over six months, scaled to 250 trading days), and the least traded companies, those beyond 98% of the cumulative traded value, are excluded. Companies with a weight below 0.5% are then excluded.

Of the rest, the top 21 by float-adjusted market capitalization are chosen with no sector consideration, and existing members ranked 22 to 39 fill places in order of rank until 30 is reached. If places remain, non-constituents ranked 22 to 30 are chosen by preferring industries that are under-represented compared with the BSE AllCap.

A significantly sized IPO can join between reviews if it ranks among the top 30 by the index's ranking rules, after a listing history of one month, and for the Sensex it must also have a derivative contract.

How it is weighted

Members are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization.

When it is reviewed

Membership is reviewed twice a year. Changes take effect on the Monday following the third Friday of Jun and Dec, using data as of the last trading day of Apr and Oct.

Base date and value

The index launched on 2 Jan 1986. Its first value date is 3 Apr 1979.
