About the Nifty Smallcap 250
Nifty Smallcap 250 is the index of the 250 companies ranked 251 to 500 by market capitalisation in the Nifty 500, built to measure the performance of small companies. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Members come from the Nifty 500, excluding the Nifty 100 and the Nifty Midcap 150. To sit in the Nifty 500 at all, a company must have traded on at least 90% of days in the previous six months and rank within the top 800 on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation.
A company also needs at least 10% of its shares in free float, or a six-month average free float market capitalisation of at least 25% of the six-month average full market capitalisation of the Nifty 500's smallest member before the review.
It held 251 companies on 30 Sep 2026. An index can hold more securities than companies when equity securities with differential voting rights (DVR) are included: a DVR of a Nifty 50 company added to the Nifty 50 would give it 51 securities and still 50 companies.
How it is weighted
Companies are weighted by free float market capitalisation, which counts the floating stock available for trading. The index level reflects the total free float market value of its stocks relative to a base market capitalisation value.
When it is reviewed
The index is re-balanced semi-annually, using average data for the six months ending the cut-off date of 31 Jan or 31 Jul. Four weeks' notice of a change is given to the market.
Base date and value
The base date is 1 Apr 2005 with a base value of 1000. The index was launched on 1 Apr 2016.
