About the BSE Smallcap 500

The BSE Smallcap 500 is an index of the BSE 1000 companies that are members of the BSE 250 Smallcap or the BSE 250 Microcap. It held 504 stocks on 30 Sep 2026. BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd. maintains it.

How companies are chosen

The universe is the BSE 1000, an index of 1,000 of the largest and most liquid Indian companies. Every company in the BSE 250 Smallcap and the BSE 250 Microcap is included, so the index has no ranking or screening step of its own. Any change in the composition of either index is carried into the BSE Smallcap 500.

Differential voting rights shares can be included if the ordinary shares of the same company are in the index universe and the DVRs pass the liquidity criteria.

How it is weighted

Companies are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalisation: the market value of the shares, counting only the part that is available to trade.

When it is reviewed

The index is rebalanced twice a year, in Jun and Dec. Each change takes effect at the open on the Monday after the third Friday of those months, using data as of the last trading day of Apr and Oct.

Between rebalancings, a company that is dropped because of a corporate action is replaced by the most eligible non-constituent from the last business day of the previous month. Companies added to the Graded Surveillance Measure list are dropped each month.

Base date and value

The index was launched on 9 Mar 2026. Its base date and first value date, the start of its calculated history, are 16 Sep 2005, with a base value of 1000.
