About the Nifty Private Bank
The Nifty Private Bank is an index of 10 private sector banks, designed to reflect the performance of banks from the private sector and maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Banks must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review. If fewer than 10 eligible stocks of a sector sit in the Nifty 500, the shortfall is filled from the top 800 stocks ranked on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation.
A company must belong to the basic industry Private Sector Bank, have traded at least 90% of days in the last six months and have a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date.
The final 10 are picked by free float market capitalisation, the value of the shares available for public trading. Companies available in NSE's Futures & Options segment, the market where futures and options on a stock trade, are preferred at that step.
How it is weighted
The index uses the periodic capped free float market capitalisation method. No single stock may exceed 23% and the top 3 stocks together may not exceed 62% at rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, using average data for the six months ending 31 Jan and 31 Jul. A stock leaves on suspension, delisting or a corporate event such as a demerger or acquisition.
Base date and value
The base date is 1 Apr 2005 and the base value is 1000. The index launched on 5 Jan 2016.
