About government penny stocks
Government penny stocks are shares of government companies that trade at a very low price. This page lists every listed company in which the central and state governments together hold 51% or more of the shares and whose share last closed at ₹10 or less, sorted by market cap.
What the page lists
The page applies two tests at once. The company must be a government company, and its latest close must be ₹10 or less. The list changes as prices close above or below ₹10 or as holdings change.
Government company
A government company, or PSU, is taken here as one in which the central and state governments together hold 51% or more of the shares. The page adds the central and state government shares in the latest shareholding filing; a company owned through another PSU counts only if governments hold 51% directly.
Penny stock
The ₹10 line is this page's own cut-off. A low price does not mean a small company, since market cap is the share price times the number of shares, so the market cap column, not the price, gives each company's size.
Reading the holding columns
Govt is the government's shares, held as promoter or as public holders, as a percentage of all shares at the latest shareholding filing. Govt promoter counts only the promoter group's government shares. Govt of promoters is the government's part of the promoter group: promoter group shares held by government divided by promoter group shares, times 100. Promoter is the whole promoter group's percentage of all shares.
Market cap and P/E
Market cap is the value of the whole company at the day's price. P/E is market cap divided by the last twelve months' profit that belongs to the company's own shareholders, using four quarters, or two half-years for companies that report half-yearly. P/E is blank for a loss-making company. PSU stocks and PSU stocks under ₹100 have their own pages.
