About textile stocks in India
Textile stocks in India are listed companies that NSE's industry classification places in the Textiles sector, which sits under Consumer Discretionary. The group covers makers of garments and apparel, spinners and makers of other textile products, and traders of textile goods.
What the Textiles sector covers
Textiles is a sector under Consumer Discretionary. It holds one industry, Textiles & Apparels, split into three basic industries.
Garments & Apparels covers makers and distributors of clothing, including knitwear and innerwear. Other Textile Products covers the rest of the chain, including spinning of yarn and cotton ginning. Trading - Textile Products is for companies that trade textile goods rather than make them.
Jute is outside this sector: jute and jute products sit in the Forest Materials sector, in its Paper, Forest & Jute Products industry, so those companies do not appear on this page.
How the page lists the companies
Companies are ranked by market cap, the share price multiplied by the number of shares. The summary gives the sector's total market cap, medians for P/E (market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit), P/B (market cap divided by net worth belonging to the company's own shareholders) and ROCE, and revenue growth and profit for the latest quarter.
ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation, leaving out other income and one-off items, as a percentage of net worth plus borrowings.
What drives textile companies
Raw material is the first cost. Spinners buy cotton, whose price follows the crop and trade policy, while makers of man-made fabrics depend on polyester and viscose inputs linked to crude oil and chemicals.
Demand comes from two sides. Domestic apparel sales follow household spending, and export orders follow buyers' sourcing choices and the import duties that apply in the destination market.
Textile production needs machinery, power and labour, so capital spending, interest costs and working capital (money tied up in stock and unpaid bills) weigh on returns.
Reading the two table views
The Valuation view shows price, market cap, P/E, ROCE, dividend yield and one-year return. The Latest quarter view shows recent quarterly results.
The sector mixes branded apparel companies with yarn and fabric makers. Their margins, capital needs and cycles differ, so a sector median is the middle of a mixed group, not a figure for any one kind of business.
