About the Nifty PSU Bank

The Nifty PSU Bank captures the performance of public sector banks, those in which the central or state government holds 51% of the outstanding share capital, directly or indirectly, traded on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It had 12 companies on 30 Sep 2026. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

Every public sector bank that trades at NSE is eligible, whether it is listed or only permitted to trade. This universe applies from 27 Dec 2019.

A bank must rank within the top 800 on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation for the last six months.

Its trading frequency must be at least 90% over the last six months and its listing history at least 1 month at the cut-off date. The final selection rests on free-float market capitalization.

How it is weighted

The index uses the free float market capitalization method: the weight of a bank follows the value of its free float, the floating stock normally expected to be available for trading in the market. The free float leaves out shareholding by the Central or State Government and government backed corporations. At a rebalancing no single stock may exceed 33% and the top 3 stocks together may not exceed 62%.

When it is reviewed

The index is rebalanced twice a year, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul. Average data for the six months ending the cut-off date is used.

Base date and value

Values start from 1000 on 1 Jan 2004; the index was launched on 30 Aug 2007.
