About the Nifty Financial Services
Nifty Financial Services Index is made up of 20 stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange that reflect the Indian financial market: banks, financial institutions, housing finance, insurance companies and other financial services companies. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Constituents of the Nifty 500 that represent financial services are eligible. The index groups them into six subsectors: banking, financial institutions, housing finance, non-banking financial companies (NBFC), insurance and other financial services.
Each subsector's weight is worked out from the average free float market capitalization of its companies, and companies are then picked in each subsector so that their weight closely matches it.
A company is included if its average free-float market capitalization is at least 1.5 times that of the smallest index constituent, and the index holds a maximum of 20 stocks. Within a subsector, preference goes to companies available for trading in NSE's Futures & Options segment.
How it is weighted
The index is computed using the free float market capitalization method. The top 3 stock weights are capped at 19%, 14% and 10%. Stocks that are not in the Futures & Options segment are each capped at 4.5%, and together at 10%. Capping is realigned quarterly, on the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
Nifty Financial Services 25/50 is a capped variant: no stock may exceed 25% and stocks above 5% together may not exceed 50%.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced every six months, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul. Average data for the six months ending the cut-off date is used, and the market gets four weeks' notice of changes.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Jan 2004 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 7 Sep 2011.
