About high volatility stocks in India

High volatility stocks in India are shares whose price has swung widely over the last year. The page lists every company with a one-year volatility of 60% or more, most volatile first, with price, beta, one-year change, the largest fall and market cap.

What volatility measures

Volatility is how widely a share's daily price changes spread around their average. It measures the size of the swings, not their direction, so a share that rises sharply can score as high as one that falls.

How the page calculates it

Vol 1Y is the standard deviation of daily log returns over the last year, multiplied by the square root of 252 (the usual count of trading sessions in a year) and then by 100. A share needs at least 200 sessions of prices to get a figure, so recent listings are left out.

As a guide to the scale, 60% a year equals a typical daily move of about 3.8%, since 60 divided by 15.87, the square root of 252, is 3.8.

The 60% cut-off

The page applies one rule: one-year volatility of 60% or more. The cut-off is the page's own, not a regulatory or exchange definition. Size and sector filters narrow the list further.

Beta, one-year change and fall

Beta is the covariance of the share's daily returns with the Nifty 500's, divided by the variance of the Nifty 500's returns, over the last year and only on sessions when both traded. A beta above 1 means the share has moved more than the index. Volatility counts all movement, while beta counts only the movement shared with the index.

Fall 1Y is the trough divided by the peak, minus 1, times 100, on closing prices over the year. The one-year change is adjusted for splits and bonuses and leaves out dividends.

Volatility and India VIX

India VIX is a different measure. NSE calculates it from Nifty option prices as the volatility the market expects over the next 30 days. Vol 1Y on this page looks backward at a single share's own closing prices, so the two are not interchangeable.
