About high beta stocks in India

High beta stocks in India are shares that have moved one and a half times as much as the market or more. This page lists companies whose beta over the last year is 1.5 or more, measured against the NIFTY 500, with the highest beta first.

What beta measures

Beta is a number for how strongly a share's price follows the market. A beta of 1 means the share has tended to move in step with the market. A beta of 1.5 means that when the market moved 1%, the share has tended to move 1.5% in the same direction, on average. A beta below 1 means smaller moves than the market.

The rule on this page

A share is listed when its beta over the last year is 1.5 or more. Beta is the covariance of the share's daily returns with the NIFTY 500's daily returns, divided by the variance of the NIFTY 500's daily returns. Covariance is how two series move together; variance is how much one series varies. Only sessions on which both traded are used. The list can be narrowed by sector and size.

Both directions

Beta does not tell up from down. A share with a beta of 1.5 has moved more than the market on rising days and on falling days alike. The Fall 1Y column shows each share's deepest fall from a close to any later close in the past year, which is a separate measurement from beta.

Limits of the figure

Beta describes the past year only, so it changes as the window moves. It also depends on the index chosen: the same share has a different beta against the NIFTY 50 than against the NIFTY 500. Company-specific news can distort it. Beta says nothing about a company's profits or its price relative to them.

Beta and volatility

Volatility is the size of a share's own price swings, whatever the market does. Beta is only the part of those swings that goes with the market. A share can swing widely and still have a low beta if its moves are unrelated to the index.
