About stocks where promoters increased their stake in 3 years

Stocks where promoters increased their stake in 3 years are listed companies whose promoter group holds at least one percentage point more of the company than it did three years earlier. The page lists every company that meets this test, with its latest shareholding split.

The three-year test

A company is listed when its promoter holding has risen by 1 percentage point or more over three years. The promoter group's holding at the latest shareholding filing is compared with its holding three years before. A company that went from 52.0% to 53.0% meets the test; one that went from 52.0% to 52.8% does not. The list can be narrowed by sector or size.

Promoters

Promoters are the people or groups who founded or control a company, and its filings name them as such. Their holding is reported every quarter, or every half year for SME companies, as a share of all the company's shares, depositary receipts traded abroad included.

Percentage points

The change is measured in percentage points, the plain difference between two holding figures. A rise from 40% to 41% is one percentage point, though the stake itself grew by 2.5%. A stake can also rise with no purchase, for example when the company buys back shares, so the page shows the change and not the cause.

How promoters raise their holding

Promoters can buy shares on the market, take shares in a preferential issue or on conversion of warrants, or subscribe to a rights issue. Under SEBI's takeover regulations, a promoter group holding between 25% and 75% may add up to 5% of the voting rights in a financial year without an open offer to other shareholders. Listed companies must also keep at least 25% in public hands, so promoter holding is capped at 75% for most companies.

What two dates leave out

The figure compares two dates and says nothing about what happened between them. A company with few shares can show a large change from a small transaction. The pledged column shows promoter shares pledged or otherwise encumbered, divided by promoter shares, times 100.
