About consumer durables companies in India
Consumer durables companies in India make goods that last years: appliances, consumer electronics, furniture, tiles, paints, jewellery, footwear and household products. NSE's industry classification places the sector under Consumer Discretionary, the group of businesses whose sales follow household spending choices.
What the sector covers
In NSE's four-level classification (macro-economic sector, sector, industry, basic industry), Consumer Durables is a sector with a single industry of the same name. That industry holds 17 basic industries, the most granular level, which tag each company by its core business.
Cycles; Consumer Electronics; Furniture, Home Furnishing; Ceramics; Granites and Marbles; Gems, Jewellery and Watches; Glass - Consumer; Household Appliances; Houseware; Leather and Leather Products; Leisure Products; Plastic Products - Consumer; Plywood Boards and Laminates; Sanitary Ware; Paints; Footwear; and Diversified Consumer Products for anything not covered above.
What the sector does not include
Garments, apparel and yarn sit in the Textiles sector. Cars, two-wheelers, tyres and components sit in Automobile and Auto Components. Retailers, restaurants and hotels sit in Consumer Services. Food, beverages and personal care are in Fast Moving Consumer Goods, a separate macro-economic sector.
What drives the businesses
Durables are bought occasionally and can be postponed, so sales follow household income, credit availability and confidence. Housing is a second driver: new homes bring demand for paints, tiles, sanitary ware, plywood, furniture and appliances.
Input costs matter because raw materials are a large share of cost: metals such as copper, aluminium and steel for appliances, crude oil derivatives for paints and plastics, gold and diamonds for jewellery. Demand is seasonal in parts of the sector, with air conditioners and coolers peaking before summer and jewellery around weddings and festivals.
How this page is built
The table lists every company tagged to the sector whose shares traded on the latest trading day, largest market cap first; market cap is share price times shares outstanding. Summary tiles show total market cap and medians for P/E, P/B and ROCE, each counting only the companies that report that figure.
P/E is market cap divided by the last four quarters' profit. P/B is market cap divided by net worth attributable to the company's shareholders. ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation (excluding other income and one-offs) divided by net worth including minority interests plus borrowings; lease liabilities are not counted.
Two charts show quarterly revenue growth against the same quarter a year earlier, and quarterly profit after tax summed across the companies that filed. A quarter is left out until at least 60% of the sector has filed it.
Sector indices
Nifty Consumer Durables, maintained by NSE Indices, holds up to 15 of the sector's companies, chosen from the Nifty 500 by free-float market cap, with a base date of 1 Apr 2005. The page also links BSE Consumer Durables and lists of paint and jewellery stocks.
