About the Nifty Energy
Nifty Energy is an index of 40 companies from the petroleum, gas and power sectors listed on the National Stock Exchange of India, maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
The final 40 are picked by free-float market capitalisation from companies in the energy sector that form part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review. Where fewer than 10 eligible stocks of a sector sit in the Nifty 500, the shortfall is filled from stocks ranked within the top 800 by average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation over the previous six months.
A company must also have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cut-off date.
How it is weighted
Each company is weighted by its free-float market capitalisation, the value of the shares normally expected to be available for trading. No single stock may weigh more than 10% and no industry more than 25% at the time of rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul and average data for the six months ending the cut-off date. The market gets four weeks' notice of a change.
Base date and value
The base date is 1 Jan 2001 at a base value of 1000, and the index launched on 1 Jul 2005.
