About insurance companies in India

Insurance companies in India are the listed life, general and health insurers, plus a few firms that handle claims, that NSE's industry classification places in Insurance. The page lists them with the largest market cap first, so it works as a list of Indian insurance stocks.

What the list contains

The screen applies one filter: industry is Insurance, within the Financial Services sector. There is no size cut-off. It can be narrowed by size or name. Market cap is the share price times the shares outstanding.

Types of insurers

Life insurers sell cover that pays on death or at maturity, plus savings-linked plans. General insurers sell motor, health and property cover. Standalone health insurers sell only health policies. General Insurance Corporation of India is a reinsurer, which insures other insurers. The list also holds a company that owns a stake in a life insurer and a firm that processes health claims for a fee.

Why some columns are blank

P/E here is market cap divided by the last twelve months' profit that belongs to the company's shareholders. It stays blank where that profit is a loss or is not available.

ROCE is operating profit after depreciation divided by net worth plus borrowings. The page does not work it out for an insurer, whose balance sheet is mostly policyholders' money it invests, so it appears only for the listed names that are not insurers.

Foreign ownership

The Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act, 2025, in force since 5 Feb 2026, lets foreign investors own up to 100% of an Indian insurance company, up from 74%.

Insurer-specific measures

A general insurer's combined ratio is claims plus expenses divided by premiums earned; under 100% means underwriting itself made a profit. A life insurer reports embedded value, the worth of its existing policies plus net assets. These sit in company filings, not in this page's columns.
