About overbought stocks

Overbought stocks, as this page lists them, are NSE and BSE shares whose 14-day relative strength index (RSI) is 70 or more. RSI is a 0 to 100 gauge of how large a share's recent rises are against its recent falls.

What RSI measures

The relative strength index turns recent closing prices, over a 14-session period, into one number from 0 to 100. A share whose closes have mostly risen reads high and one whose closes have mostly fallen reads low. It uses price alone.

The formula

RSI is 100 times the average gain divided by the average gain plus the average loss over 14 sessions. A gain is a session's rise in the closing price and a loss is a session's fall.

The 70 cut-off

This page keeps every share with an RSI of 70 or more and sorts them from the highest reading down. By convention, 70 and 30 mark overbought and oversold. They are conventions, not limits: a share can stay above 70 for weeks while a trend runs, and the reading does not say when a rise will stop. The oversold screen lists the other end, an RSI of 30 or lower.

Other columns

From 50-day and From 200-day are today's close divided by the average close of the last 50 or 200 sessions, minus 1, times 100. ADX is a 0 to 100 measure of how much of the last 14 sessions' movement ran one way. Beta is the covariance of the share's daily returns with the NIFTY 500's over one year, divided by the NIFTY 500's variance. Fall 1Y is the year's worst drop from a closing high to a later closing low, in per cent.

Limits of the screen

A 14-session window is short, so one large move, such as a jump on a result day, can lift RSI above 70 alone. In a thinly traded share a few orders can move the close sharply and push the reading up fast.
