About metal stocks in India
Metal stocks in India are the listed companies that mine ores and minerals or make and trade steel, aluminium, copper, zinc and other metals. NSE's industry classification groups them as the Metals & Mining sector, part of the Commodities macro-economic sector.
What the sector covers
NSE's classification splits Metals & Mining into five industries: Ferrous Metals, Non-Ferrous Metals, Minerals & Mining, Metals & Minerals Trading and Diversified Metals. Ferrous means iron-based, so it holds iron and steel makers along with pig iron, sponge iron and ferro alloys. Non-ferrous holds metals without iron as the base: aluminium, copper, zinc and precious metals such as gold and silver.
Minerals & Mining covers industrial minerals; coal miners are classed under Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels instead. A company is placed by the business that brings in more than half of its revenue, and an industry filter narrows the table to any one industry.
Steel, aluminium and copper
Steel companies buy iron ore and coking coal, or scrap, and sell flat products such as coils and plates and long products such as bars and rods. Aluminium and copper producers depend on bauxite, power and imported concentrate, and sell at prices linked to international exchanges.
What drives metal companies
Metal prices are set largely by global supply and demand, so earnings swing with the price cycle more than with company-specific events. Domestic demand follows construction, infrastructure, auto and machinery spending.
Trade policy matters for steel. A three-year safeguard duty on certain flat steel imports runs from 21 Apr 2025 to 20 Apr 2028: 12% in the first year, 11.5% in the second and 11% in the third, with imports priced above set floor prices exempt.
How this page ranks companies
Companies are ranked by market cap, share price times the number of shares, and the summary shows medians: P/E as market cap over the last four quarters' profit, P/B as market cap over net worth attributable to the company's own shareholders.
Revenue growth compares each quarter with the same quarter a year earlier, using companies that filed both. A quarter appears in the chart only once at least 60% of the sector has filed it. ROCE, return on capital employed, is operating profit after depreciation, leaving out other income and one-offs, divided by net worth including minority interests plus borrowings. Lease liabilities are not counted.
Nifty Metal index
Nifty Metal holds up to 15 metal and mining companies chosen from the Nifty 500 and weighted by free-float market cap, the value of shares available to trade. Its base date is 1 Jan 2004. The page also links BSE Metal Index and lists of steel stocks and mining stocks.
