About F&O stocks list

The F&O stocks list is every share that has futures and options contracts on NSE. These are derivatives, contracts whose value comes from the share's price. SEBI sets which shares qualify, by their size and how much they trade, and the list changes a few times a year.

Futures and options

A futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell a share at a fixed price on a fixed date. An option gives the right, but not the duty, to do so.

Eligibility rules

NSE applies SEBI's stock selection rules, set in a circular of 30 Aug 2024. Each test covers the previous six months on a rolling basis. A share must rank in the top 500 by both average daily market capitalisation and average daily traded value. Its median quarter-sigma order size, the order value that moves the price by a quarter of a standard deviation, must be at least ₹75 lakh. Its market-wide position limit, the cap on all traders' combined open positions, must be at least ₹1,500 crore. Its average daily delivery value must be at least ₹35 crore.

Entry and exit

The tests are worked out every month. A share's derivatives must also trade actively: an average daily turnover of ₹75 crore (futures plus option premiums) and an average daily notional open interest of ₹500 crore. A share that fails any test for three months in a row leaves the segment. No new contracts are issued on it, contracts already listed trade until they expire, and it cannot return for one year.

Lot size and settlement

Contracts trade in lots, a fixed number of shares per contract, and one lot is the smallest position. A share's futures and options use the same lot size, set by the exchange. Stock options are settled by delivery of the shares.

How the columns are worked out

From ATH is the closing price divided by the all-time high, minus 1, times 100. Vol vs usual is the day's volume divided by the average of the 50 earlier sessions. Delivery is the share of traded quantity taken into buyers' accounts, not squared off the same day, averaged over 20 sessions.
