About stocks below 50 DMA

Stocks below 50 DMA are shares whose latest close is under the average of their last 50 daily closes. The 50-day moving average is a common gauge of the medium-term price trend, covering roughly ten weeks of trading.

How the screen works

The page lists every share at or below its 50-day average. The distance is today's close divided by the average close of the last 50 sessions, minus 1, times 100. A result of 0% or less passes, so a share exactly on the line is included.

Each row also shows the distance from the 200-day average, RSI, ADX, beta, the deepest fall over the last year, and sessions since the 50-day average crossed the 200-day average and since the MACD line crossed its signal line. Filters cover sector and size: large cap is the 100 largest companies by market cap, mid cap the next 150, small cap the rest.

The 50-day moving average

A moving average is the mean of the last set number of closing prices, recalculated each session as the oldest price drops out and the newest enters.

The 20-day average reacts faster and the 200-day average describes the long-term trend, so a share can be under one and over another.

What a close below it means

It means the latest price is under the mean of the previous 50 closes. That states a position, not a cause: the price may have fallen recently, or stayed flat while earlier prices were higher.

A share a fraction of a percent below the line and one far below it both pass, so the page shows the exact distance.

Reading it with other measures

Analysts also look at the direction of the 50-day line, and at the 200-day distance to see whether the share is under its long-term average too. RSI compares recent gains with recent losses over 14 sessions, on a 0 to 100 scale. ADX measures how one-directional the last 14 sessions were.

Limits

The screen works on closing prices, so a share that dipped under the average during a session but closed above it is not listed. A moving average describes past prices and does not forecast them.
