About the Nifty FMCG
The Nifty FMCG is an index of 15 stocks from the FMCG sector listed on the National Stock Exchange. FMCG stands for fast moving consumer goods: non-durable, mass consumption products available off the shelf. The index is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Companies must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review and form part of the FMCG sector. The qualifying industries are animal feed, breweries and distilleries, cigarettes and tobacco products, dairy products, diversified FMCG, edible oil, household products, meat products including poultry, other agricultural products, other beverages, other food products, packaged foods, personal care, seafood, stationery, sugar, and tea and coffee.
If the Nifty 500 holds fewer than 10 eligible FMCG companies, the shortfall is taken from the top 800 companies ranked by average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation.
A company needs a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cutoff date. The final 15 companies are chosen by free-float market capitalization.
How it is weighted
The index is computed on free-float market capitalization, with no single stock above 33% and the top 3 stocks together no more than 62% at the time of rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually. The cut-off dates are 31 Jan and 31 Jul of each year, using average data for the six months ending the cut-off date.
Base date and value
Its values start from a base of 1000 on 1 Jan 1996; it was launched on 22 Sep 1999.
