About low beta stocks in India

Low beta stocks in India are listed companies whose one-year beta is 0.5 or less. Beta measures how much a share's price has moved for each move in the market. At 0.5 or below, the share has moved half as much as the market or less, or has moved the other way.

The 0.5 cut-off

The page applies one rule: a one-year beta of 0.5 or less. No official definition of low beta exists; 0.5 is the line this screen draws. Companies are sorted from the lowest beta up, so the first rows are the most negative, and the list can be narrowed by sector and size.

How beta is worked out

Beta is the covariance of the share's daily returns with the daily returns of the NIFTY 500, divided by the variance of the NIFTY 500's daily returns, over the last year. Only sessions on which both traded are used.

A beta of 1 means the share has moved in step with the NIFTY 500. A beta of 0.5 means that on a day the index moved 2%, the share tended to move 1%.

Negative beta

A beta below zero means the share's daily moves have tended to go opposite to the index over the year. The 0.5 cut-off includes every negative value. A share whose price changes on few days also lands near zero, because its moves rarely line up with the index's.

What beta leaves out

Beta looks backward over one year and changes as the window moves. It says how closely a share followed the index, not how much it moved on its own: a share can have a low beta and still swing widely on company news. It also depends on the index chosen, which here is the NIFTY 500.

Low beta and large falls

A low beta does not mean small price moves. The Fall 1Y column beside it is the deepest fall from a close to any later close in the past year, and a share with a beta near zero can still show a fall of a third or more, from moves of its own.
